Awesome Photo Contests Alert!

"The image is of Whitby Abbey located on the east cliff of Whitby in North Yorkshire, England. Whitby is famous for it’s links with Dracula and has become a magnet for Goths who have regular weekend get togethers in the town and of course this location is very popular with them. That inspired me to see what I could capture at night when of course the darkness adds the right atmosphere. I knew this particular evening was one when the moon was full and so that was what. The colour in the sky comes from the orange glow of the street lights reflecting back off the clouds which were backlit by the moon. I am amazed at just how much ambient light from the moon and nearby street lights has been picked up by the camera. I certainly didn't see it as bright as that and in fact I struggled to focus because it was so dark and live view only showed the strongly lights. Any attempt at shooting with a narrow aperture was a waste of time and only when I opened up to f5 did I start to get the detail needed in the building. Once I got to that point I was able to take a shot or two and adjust the focussing by looking at them and tweaking accordingly with my last move being to up the ISO to 200 from 100 which just helped show a bit more info in the shadows, beyond ISO 200 things got a little bit too noisy for my liking. I sued a Canon EOS 5D MarkII camera wiht 192 second exposure at a focal lenght of 24mm" - Steve

Hi Emily, please tell us a bit about yourself?

Hi there. I live in a little bungalow built in 1906 in Oakland, California with my husband Jake (who also built and designed the UX for TinyAtlas and all my websites in the past) and our young son Otto (and cat Omai). I am a professional photographer and I work for commercial clients like Apple and Google as well as magazines like Travel and Leisure and Ritz Carlton. I moved to San Francisco after college to pursue photography as a career.

When did you start taking photos and what inspired you to get started?

I started taking photos in early high school I think. My father had a manual Olympus and a love of photography that drove my interest at the time. We also always read the Sunday NYT and the magazine has always been a big source of inspiration.
